Every month I treat myself. These treats are usually zine shaped and arrive in the post. I have a few favourite online shops I like to browse through and this month I got all my goodies from Good Press Gallery in Glasgow. They do a good thing there, supporting many visual arts with their exhibition space and a huge collection of zines, magazines and photobooks for sale.

The first one to catch my eye was DD/MM/YYYY by Alessandro Zuek Simonetti.

georgia Krawiec’s „EXodus” is a layered and complex story that confronts the viewer with the subject of death. The person we see in the photographs is the author herself. She uses pinhole techniques as a language of her emotional expression. Our editor, Joanna Kinowska talks to georgia Krawiec about her series, which has recently been exhibited (Placebo Experiences) during this year’s PhotoMonth Kraków Festival.

Joanna Kinowska: How did “EXodus” start? What was your main source of inspiration? I’ve heard that words were as important as the conceptual approach to imagery?

georgia Krawiec: In 2006 I was given a book of short nonsense stories, I was absorbed by it and it caused a further exploration of this subject. It’s an amazing kind of literature, grotesque, unclear and obscure, but also full of dark humor. By exploring the subject deeper, I discovered Karen Karin Rosenberg, an American novelist from New Jersey and her short theatre plays, and contacted her soon after. I was mesmerized by the way her main character’s psychological states were drawn by words and phrases, i.e.: “ideal and transcendental”, “liberation through submission”, “wild and capricious”, “manifestation”, “volatile and unpredictable”. While working on “EXodus” I tried to pour all my inspiration into the character and let her tell the story.

A chat with Angel L.Gonzalez and Moritz Neumüller

Moritz: You told me that these last two years have been the hardest of your life... what’s so complicated about organising an event like PhotoIreland?

Angel: Yeah, thanks for bringing that up. You know, I am used to working on my own, being self employed for over a decade, but the challenge has been to cope with an extra humongous workload while trying to maintain some sort of personal life. It’s Pretty hard. I missed many parties, birthdays, and trips. However, what I’ve learnt in the last 4 years, the people I’ve met, the places I’ve been to... makes it all worthwhile. Right now, I feel much more calm than in previous years, incredibly happy of what we have achieved, and quite lucky to have met you.

prism #06: Happy B-Day to prism!

We are honoured to introduce you to our anniversary issue of prism magazine.

Twelve months ago  prism was no more than a beam of invisible light, waiting to be refracted and amuse all spectators with a palette of sensational colours. A year ago we whispered ‘let the light in’ and prism was brought to existence.

Over the past year our team of talented photography enthusiasts has provided the audience with seven amazing issues, each topped with the creme de la creme of contemporary photography. It was a challenging yet very rewarding year.

We celebrated established names and promoted emerging artists, we partnered with two big photographic feasts in Dublin and Belfast, organised a very successful international instant photography show and supported every show and every other photographic initiative we could. On top of that we have made some great friends and received a lot of positive feedback. We couldn’t have expected more!

This time we are introducing our audience to the work of: Jan Brykczynski from Sputnik Collective, John Cyr, Paula Muhr, Thomas Devaux, Sasha Rudensky and Thomas Jackson, Jasmina Jasinska, Patricia Klich, Amy Hanrahan, georgia Krawiec, Darek Fortas and Karol Liver.

ENCOUNTERS by The DICE Project | PhotoIreland Festival 2012

OPENING NIGHT: July 2nd, 6:30pm, 2012

prism is happy to invite all to the event we heartily support.

The Encounters exhibition  brings together the photographic works of artists: Paul Corcoran, Bartosz Nowicki and Will Hartley. The photographers, based in Ireland and the U.K., work collectively as The DICE Project. The group was formed in 2011 to support and promote new work as well as explore ideas of working collectively. This exhibition brings together, for the first-time, work from a number of series, each one a personal response by the artist to situations that have both effected them and motivated them to respond photographically.

f/22 Group Exhibition | PhotoIreland Festival 2012

Opening night: Thursday, 12th July, 6pm-9pm
Due to massive success of last year’s ‘Four Floors’ group exhibition, MadArt announces another amazing photographic feast and invites all photography devotees to their beautiful, old Georgian venue, which once again will be converted into a massive art-space. The exhibition will be held from 13th of July to 19th of July 2012. The opening night will be held on 12th of July 2012 at 6pm.

The show is a fantastic opportunity for both professional photographers and talented enthusiasts to present their work to a wider audience and be a part of acclaimed PhotoIreland Festival 2012.
